Gunmen in the early hours of Thursday killed two men and bombed a police station in Rimi Local Government Council of Katsina state.
It was gathered that the police station was razed down with scores of police weapons destroyed. About 15 rifles belonging to the police were said to have been burnt.
An eyewitness said the gunmen, numbering about 30, also abducted a French nationale, Mr. Francis Colump, who is an employee of SA Vergnet as well as a site engineer for the state’s wind farm project.
He said the gunmen, in a commando-like fashion, stormed Rimi town in three vehicles and attacked on a police station and residence of the kidnapped French citizen.
A police source, who would not want to be identified in print said, “They (gunmen) divided themselves into two groups with one of the groups attacking the police station while the other group hit the residence of the kidnapped victim.”
It was gathered that the gunmen used gas cylinder and explosives to bomb the police station before attacking Colump’s residence.
“In the house, the gunmen killed two persons and shot a mobile police personnel attached to the French man as his orderly,” a source said.
One of those killed, according to the source, was a night watchman at the French man’s house, Rabe Dan-ungwa, 40. His friend, Abubakar Salisu, 25, was with him when the armed men struck.
Also, the policeman shot by the gunmen, was said to be receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Kano.
The state Commissioner of Police, Abdullahi Magaji, who was on an assessment tour of the area, said the police had commenced preliminary investigation into the incident, adding that the police suspected an insider collaboration.
